He's a Cinderella!

Caught in a frustrating legal battle, RG Regency Skipper Dude was rescued and transformed from a skinny depressed horse to the magnificent stallion you see below.
He was bought from Grunden Ranch at six months by a horseman with a good eye for quality. After his death his widow moved her five morgans from place to place and incurred a series of stableman's leins.

REPEATELY ABANDONED
In 2001 Dude was at the Gang Stable in training for combined driving for over a year. Owing money, the owner abruuptly moved her horses for an older woman, June, to care for. For TWO WEEKS! Although June cared for them well, she could not exercise them and the owner rarely visited. After two years, June placed a call to Gary who, having been burned, didn't want to know any more. But he's a curious man, the familiar story came out of abandoned horses and unpaid bills. Gary called Katherine Graber, who knew an attorney who would help.

WE REALLY NEED A LAWYER!

The first court date was May 5, 2004 and was followed by a series of petitions, filings, bankruptcy proceedings, pleas, convenient confusion of the court dates, witnesses, serving of papers, and hearings in both Federal and State Courts. A number of times we were counting the hours, excited phone calls to each other and biting our nails, only to hear that another postponement had been granted. On August 5, the horses were awarded to June. I was lucky to buy Dude.

DUDE COMES HOME
We picked up Dude the next day, and discovered his teeth badly need work and that was why he had lost so much weight in addition to muscle mass from standing in a small pen for two years
.

He was such a sad sight.

But you could still see his beautiful head and kind eye.

After his teeth were done, Gary put him on a training schedule to rebuild muscle and to get into
competetive driving form. He gained 250lbs over the next five months and regained his bright outlook.

After two months, he was looking better but not fully recovered.

THE FINAL RESULTS AFTER MONTHS AND LOVE AND CARE

He was well and full of himself. With his big floating extended trot, he  was
perfect as a driving horse, and as luck would have it, Gary is an expert
at training driving horses. Isn't synchronisity wonderful?

Dude was the son of the incomparable Windover Regency and the great grandson of Flyhawk, which made him
one of the closest relatives to Flyhawk today.  DUDE HAS NINE CROSSES TO FLYHAWK!

Flyhawk was known for his excellent confirmation, big floating extended trot and good temperament. www.thesportmorgan.org/flyhawk.htm
. Dude has inherited all these qualities. Even as a stallion, he needed no special handling, was gentle with mares and respectful of people.

 To Dude's  friends:

With great sadness and  regret I put Dude down on May 7, 2005.  His founder
had progressed to the  point of no return: the coffin bone had come through the
sole on one foot.  His back feet were starting to founder

He had a very happy last  several months.  Much of the pain was controlled,
he got to breed a number  of times (but no pregnancies), he had a luxury stall,
even with a window that  could be opened, he got out every day, and was
fussed over, and he had lots of  good things to eat.  He was greatly loved by a
number of people.

But with the progressing symptoms, the pain would be soon closing in on  him.
Even overnight, his feet had become much more painful.  The vet came  and
gave him a nerve block in both front feet and a general pain killer.  I, my close
friend Ros who also loved him, and my very kind vet,  walked with him, with a
carrot every few steps, out to a beautiful rolling  pasture with a single
tree.  There the vet ended his beautiful life.  He is buried under the tree.

I, and others, feel inspired by him.

Roz and her husband lost their only son to a gun accident about a year  and a
half ago. John's dream had been to breed Driftwood quarter horses and Ros
and her husband had purchased a good Driftwood mare to carry on John's  dream.
Right after saying goodbye to Dude, we discovered that this  mare had just had
her foal, the first of John's Driftwood quarter horses.  That colt is named
"John's Driftwood Dude" and will become the foundation  stallion for their
breeding program.  So Dude will be remembered.

He was a noble horse.

Update: Three weeks  later, we discovered that the two mares that Dude bred
had settled after  all!  We are expecting two Dude foals in May 2006.  Can you
imagine how excited we are?

Final Update in Summer 2006:  Dude's two foals were born.  LMSterling Marcus was sold to Lynne Baum vonMyer.

The other, LMSterling The Aviator, is the living image of Dude, including his wonderful temperament and easy going ways.

See him on the stallion page.
